Award-winning Ali Abbasi joins us for an inspiring masterclass!
MASTERCLASS WITH ALI ABBASI. Abbasi has a history of creating suspenseful, captivating films and his latest work »Holy Spider« (2022) is no exception. With his international background and diverse set of creative skills, Abbasi has a way of drawing in the audience with his raw and poignant storytelling – intentionally shying away from the classic forms of poetic storytelling that his home country Iran is known for.
Abbasi was born and raised in Teheran, Iran, where he began his academic career as a student at the Polytechnic University of Teheran. Already showing an aptitude for constructing creative works of art, he migrated to Sweden in 2002 to continue his architectural studies at the Royal Institute of Technology. After finishing his degree, Abbasi changed the direction of his studies and continued his international academic path at the National Film School of Denmark.
After graduating in 2011, Abbasi quickly found success on the film scene. His first feature film »Shelley« (2016) was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, and his second feature »Border « (2018) won the Un Certain Regard award at Cannes, as well as being selected as Sweden's nomination for the Academy Awards. Once again, Abbasi has impressed the film world with his latest film »Holy Spider« (2022) – a suspenseful Persian-language thriller following an Iranian female journalist investigating a serial killer in the holy city of Mashhad. The film has already received critical acclaim, and was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
